This recipe is a slight variation of an Authentic Philadelphia Cheesesteak. The sandwich is filled with grilled thinly sliced ribeye steak, caramelized onion and bell pepper and melted Provolone cheese. Amoroso Hoagie Rolls are the traditional bread. I can’t find it where I live, so I made and shared the recipe here.

I saw this recipe on the “Stay At Home Chef” food blog, and it reminded me of a small sandwich shop that I used to frequent. Sadly, the shop has been closed for many years. I still remember the combination of thin grilled steak, caramelized onion and bell peppers.

My first challenge was finding Amoroso Hoagie Rolls. Nope. I’ve never seen it on the West Coast of California, where I live. So I made my own!

I spotted a package of shaved beef steak, at my local Trader Joe’s, so that was the final push I needed to recreate a “Philly” Cheesesteak. Rib Eye is the traditional choice of steak, but this “mystery” thinly sliced steak looked like a good way to go.

A cast iron griddle turned out to be the easiest way to grill the onion, bell peppers. After a few minutes, the steak was added since I didn’t want to overcook the meat. This only takes a few minutes.

Nice caramelization! Now, for the cheese.

Provolone was my choice, since Cheese Whiz isn’t something I buy. A lid helped to melt the cheese is a matter of a minute or two. Let’s eat!

A light slathering of mayo was a last minute decision– totally optional. I hope this sandwich is as good as it looks.

TASTING NOTES: The Homemade Hoagie Rolls were soft a fluffy. The steak was perfectly seasoned with just salt and pepper. Caramelized onion and bell pepper is one of my favorite combinations for anything that is grilled. This brought back memories from that small sandwich shop. I only wish I had doubled the amount of cheese that I used. Next time. I’ve never been to Philadelphia, but if I ever get to visit– I’ll seek out an official Cheesesteak sandwich. It’s delicious!
