Homemade Sour Mix for Margaritas

Equipment

  • 1 3 quart sauce pan or larger
  • 1 rasp for zesting citrus (optional)
  • 1 fine mesh sieve to remove zest and pulp
  • 1 funnel makes pouring much easier!
  • 1 2-quart (or larger) measuring glass
  • 1 quart (2-cup) storage glass or jar

Ingredients

For the simple syrup:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

For the citrus:

  • 4 lemons to equal 1 cup of juice
  • 4 limes to equal 1 cup of juice

Instructions

For the simple syrup:

  • Bring the sugar and water to a gentle simmer, stirring, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat. Allow to cool.
  • Once cooled, pour into a glass measuring glass (minimum of 4 cups is ideal).

For the citrus:

  • OPTIONAL: Using a zester (rasp) zest both the lemon and lime, before juicing. The zest will add more citrus flavor to the mix.
  • Squeeze the lemon and lime juice and add to the simple syrup. Add the citrus zest (if using). Stir until combined.
  • Using a fine-mesh sieve, pour the mix into a glass container (such as a Mason jar) to remove any pulp or zest.
  • Refrigerate for at least 4 hour, up to 2 weeks.

Notes

You can decrease or increase the amount of sour mix that you want. Just remember that you want equal parts sugar, water, lemon and lime juice.
